Samui Regatta starts today

30 May 2011

The 10th Koh Samui Sawadee Regatta begins today with sailing commencing at the island’s Chaweng Beach at 10:00. The regatta is based on the facilities around the Centara Grand Beach Resort and as well as sailing, offers a plethora of other activities and entertainment.

Sailing takes place from 10:00 to 16:00 every day except Thursday until Saturday 4 June. The annual event has burgeoned into one of the region’s most popular and the 2011 version has attracted lots of entrants.

Vessels will include Optimist class dinghies manned by juniors, as well as ones from around the region. The regatta will see Australian champion Ray Roberts vie with rivals from New Zealand for the title of Yachting Sailor of Australia 2011-2012.

Although the primary regatta activity is yachting, during its 10 year history the event has become something of a celebratory festival with fine dining, parties, music performances, fashion shows, marketing and property sales expos.

Regatta sponsors besides Centara Grand Beach Resort include Neil Pryde, Hertz and the Four Seasons Group. The sponsors all say that this event is perfect for promoting their unique products and services.

Callum Laing is a Bangkok-based entrepreneur who assumed management responsibilities for the Samui Regatta three years ago. He said recently that the occasion offered a wonderful diversity of social and spectator action suitable for most tastes.

The regatta concludes on Sunday with an appropriately named Recovery Brunch and a special Optimist class race.
