Samui hotel occupancy hits record peaks

24 Mar 2013

Figures just released by tourism officials on Koh Samui have revealed that 2012 was a bumper year for hotels and resorts on the island. The report says that total room occupancy for the 12-month period hit an astonishing 68 per cent.

The collated data also shows more families are visiting. Tourism agencies say this seems to indicate the island is going through the transition from backpackers’ haunt to mainstream holiday destination.

One significant factor that has persuaded people to opt for Samui holidays is the ease of getting here. Most flights to Samui are operated by regional carrier Bangkok Airways. The airline has increased the size of its fleet and also upped flight frequencies to Samui. There are now almost 200,000 extra seats available every year.

Another key factor in Samui’s boom is the amount of Russian holidaymakers who now take holidays here. Although more than 25 per cent of the total number of people holidaying on Samui are Thais, Britons or Germans the number of Russian arrivals grew significantly in 2012 and is expected to overtake one of these core markets in the near future.

One local tour agency manager said prospective holidaymakers did not only look at beaches when choosing destinations nowadays. He explained by saying that the perceived diversity of nightlife, dining and activities in particular locations also played a part in the decision making process.

Samui is renowned for gourmet dining and the hedonistic nightlife of Lamai and Chaweng. A construction project underway in the latter will see a lifestyle and shopping mall added to the island’s attractions.
