Thai Airways to cancel Samui flights

10 Sep 2012

Thai Airways has said it will stop flying between Bangkok and Koh Samui early next year. The last of the twice daily flights in each direction will operate on 15 January 2013.

The Thai national carrier began flying from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to the southern Thai island in February 2008. The airline currently utilises Boeing 737-400s on the route.

Until the service ends, THAI flights will depart from Suvarnabhumi at 07:45 and 15:20 for the one-hour flight to Samui. The return services from Samui leave at 09:30 and 17:05.

With THAI pulling out of Samui services, the only airline flying from the Thai capital to the Gulf of Thailand island will be Bangkok Airways. This regional carrier runs around 15 daily flights in each direction with departures at regular intervals from 06:00 to 22:00.

Bangkok Airways markets itself as a boutique carrier, but sells tickets in the same way that a budget airline does. Early reservations are fairly cheap and compare favourably with THAI’s fares, but late bookings tend to be expensive.

Samui International Airport, owned by Bangkok Airways, is currently one of the busiest in the country. Together with flights from Suvarnabhumi, it also has domestic services from Krabi, Phuket and Pattaya as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Although these other flights are predominantly operated by Bangkok Airways, Singapore Airlines subsidiary SilkAir is one of the airport’s alternate carriers. The 1Stop Samui getting here pages provide details of other ways of reaching the island.
