Samui Airport garners travel magazine award

Koh Samui International Airport has been rated as joint ninth in a poll conducted by a leading online travel magazine. SmartTravelAsia.com ran the Best in Travel Poll between May and June this year and travellers put the small, but charming, regional airport among heavyweights such as London Heathrow Airport and Dubai International Airport.

SmartTravelAsia.com has been running the Best in Travel Polls for the past seven years, and Samui Airport has had a Top 10 placing for the last six. It climbed up one position from last year’s ranking.

The airport on Samui is the principal air gateway for the island and its neighbours, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The airport’s two terminals have a unique design in that they are open sided and covered with a thatched roof.

Around 1.5 million passengers pass through the airport every year and flights are operated by Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Berjaya Air. Bangkok Airways owns the airport and the bulk of the flights arriving here are operated by the carrier.

Bangkok Airways also featured in the SmartTravelAsia.com poll results and ranked a creditable seventh in the Best Cabin Service category. A statement issued by the privately-owned airline said the award was a glowing testament to its dedication to premium quality service for passengers.

As well as flying from Bangkok to Samui, Bangkok Airways offers direct services here from Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket, Hong Kong and Singapore.
