Samui Amazing Thailand Grand Sale

23 May 2011

The Amazing Thailand Grand Sale will reach Koh Samui in the middle of June. Visitors will be able to garner discounts of up to 80 per cent by shopping or using services at locations displaying a logo with the sale advertised on it.

The annual sale is traditionally held in Thailand during the low season months between June and August. It is promoted by the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) and offers discounts in the main tourism regions of the country which are Samui, Phuket, Had Yai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

This year’s sale begins on 15 June and will run through until 15 August. Discounts range from 10 to 80 per cent and are available on health spas, hotel rooms and services, golf, entertainment, clothing, footwear, jewellery, online travel bookings and even some air tickets.

King Power Duty Free outlets at airports in Thailand will also be running their own promotional deals during the two-month sale. A new initiative for this year is the inclusion of OTOP products in the sale.

OTOP stands for One Tambon One Product. Tambon translates into English as district and products produced in them are made by collectives. OTOP items tend to be traditional items and vary from organic shampoo, through hand-woven sarongs to intricate wood carvings and old-style Lao and Thai musical instruments.

Many OTOP items are sold at street markets which take place in participating areas. On Samui the markets are known as Walking Streets and usually take place one evening a week.

The Walking Street at Mae Nam is on Thursday, at Bo Phut on Friday and on Sunday, in Nathon. Visitors wishing to pick up a bargain only need to keep an eye out for decals displaying Amazing Thailand Grand Sale.
