Beauty queens visit the south

Contestants in the Miss Thailand World 2010 visited southern Thai destinations last week.

A bevy of 30 beauties were back in Bangkok, on Friday, after a promotional tour of the south, that was centered on Phuket.

The Phuket Gazette covered several of the photo opportunities. On Friday, the Gazette observed the beauties as they the attended the soft opening of a local souvenir and handicraft outlet.

The One Tambon One Product (OTOP) Shop, at Saphan Hin, on Phuket, was transformed into a vision of loveliness, by the presence of some of the contestants.

Also at the event were members of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO), including Paiboon Upatising, the president.

The OTOP shops are an innovative idea to attract tourists, and entice them to buy items that are handmade in local tambons (districts).

The OTOP at Saphan Hin is housed in a derelict entertainment complex, that had lain idle for a number of years, and has been lavishly refurbished.

The Miss Thailand World entrants will take part in additional publicity and photo events until the contest itself takes place.

Miss Thailand World 2010 will be shown live on Thai television on the evening of August 14. The lucky winner of the contest will represent the nation in this year’s Miss World contest. The venue for Miss World 2010 is the resort of Sanya, on China’s Hainan Island.

The Miss Thailand World 2010 runner up will also get a trip to China, to take part in the Miss Chinese International 2011 competition.

Page Three model gets rabies treatment

A one-time model turned singer is having anti-rabies vaccinations after a bite from a feral cat.

Samantha Fox, 44, was holidaying on Koh Samui, with friend Myra Stratton, when she was bitten by a stray cat that she was feeding.

The pair were dining at a local restaurant, when the incident occurred. The duo had been feeding a group of cats. One of them lay down on Ms Fox’s feet. When she leant down to pet it, the cat sank its teeth into her.

Ms Fox started the treatment for rabies, a potentially killer disease, after the restaurant proprietor informed her the cat was a crazed animal and probably had rabies.

The victim had initial jabs for hydrophobia (rabies) at a hospital on Samui Island. After returning to England she continued the course of treatment.

Ms Fox said later that she pitied Thai cats. They were left to fend for themselves and had to scavenge for food, in much the same way as rats.

She added that she often fed the cats on pieces of shellfish and she seemed to be getting on well with this particular feline, when it turned on her.

The incident has not changed Fox’s love of cats. She still has four cats at the London home she shares with her partner.

Hydrophobia symptoms can take up to three months to show and, as well as the well-documented dread of water and chronic thirst, include headaches, flu and paralysis.

Ms Fox is the latest in a line of celebrities drawn by Samui’s charms. Recent visitors include Katie Price, Lewis Hamilton and Gordon Ramsay.
