Thai man admits to Full Moon Party murder

A tattoo artist from Phuket has admitted to strangling a female German tourist during one of Koh Phangan’s infamous Full Moon Parties last month. Tiwat “Ood” Kasemchoke, age 29, confessed to local police that he strangled Astrid Al-Assaad Schachmer and dumped her body in the sea near Baan Naiwok Beach.

The 45 year-old German woman was found the next day topless and with bruises on her neck. Tiwat was one of three suspects interviewed by police after they learned he was the last person seen with Astrid on the night in question. After an interrogation, Tiwat admitted to premeditated murder.

“She had humiliated me. She often told other foreigners that I fell for her and tried to rape her several times, which is not true,” Tiwat claimed, “It was she who fell in love with me and wanted to be in a relationship. I’d planned to kill her. So, I invited her to a party at a shop where I’ve been working. Then, I suggested that we walk to a beach together. That’s where I punched and strangled her,” he said.

The murder puts tourist safety back on the short list of problems facing Thai tourism. Janchote Piriyasathit, the head of the Koh Phangan Hotel Business Association, said the murder was the first of its kind in his 10 years on the island. He suggested, however, that security be improved on the island during the parties.
