Lots of options to match your price range

Samui has a wide range of guesthouses, offering plenty of options at reasonable prices. There are so many places to choose from, especially at Chaweng and Lamai where it is easy to stroll around until you find somewhere that suits your taste and budget. Bear in mind that these are very popular locations and the guesthouses nearest to the main nightlife centres tend to be noisier.

The beaches at Mae Nam and Choeng Mon are much quieter, but it's possible to find some peace and tranquility all over the island, with some great beachside locations, too. Since Samui has gone upmarket, you shouldn’t expect to find guesthouses right on the beach at backpacker prices, but, if you don’t insist on staying in Chaweng or Lamai, you’ll have more luck.

Samui guesthouses at Lamai Beach

Beer's House Beach Bungalows: Set right on the beach with good value, comfortable bungalows, Beer’s is one of the best budget options. It is also friendly and has a reasonable restaurant, too. New Hut: Popular with visitors for years, New Hut is a welcoming place with a good restaurant and has basic huts with shared bathrooms. Usually very busy. Bungalows from 300 to 600 baht. Lamai Beach, tel: 089 729 8489.

Mira Mare: Has a range of bungalows, with fan and air conditioning both available. The fan rooms are set back from the beach and are good value, while the air-conditioned bungalows have better facilities and locale. Sea Breeze Bungalows: Has a good range of rooms, with good value, simple wooden bungalows and more luxurious air-conditioned ones. It’s a friendly place with a good restaurant, too. Bungalows from 500-1,500 baht. 124/3 Moo 3, Lamai Beach, tel: (077) 424 258.

Samui guesthouses at Chaweng Beach

Matlang Resort: Situated on Chaweng Beach with great views out to Matlang Island, Matlang Resort has some good options for budget travellers. They are a short distance from the main nightlife areas, but far enough away to offer some peaceful relaxation. Dew Drop Hut: A genuine budget option guesthouse in Chaweng - bungalows are a good size, but basic. Prices at 400 baht low season, 600 baht in the high season.

Cheap bungalows can be found right on the beach

The Loft Samui: Designer hotel close to the beach on Chaweng Beach Road in Sri Lanka style and offering complete facilities. All 70 rooms (singles and doubles) have A/C, hot water, TV and fridge, plus it has a restaurant serving Thai and Western food along with free wireless internet. Green Guesthouse: Located just off the beach (but on the beach side of the road), this place comes with clean and comfortable rooms. Fan rooms at 400-500 baht, air-conditioned 600-1,365 baht, 156/7 Moo 2, Chaweng Beach, tel: (077) 422 611, fax: (077) 422 794.

Best Beach Bungalows: While it doesn’t quite live up to the name, this place is a decent budget option guesthouse, with simple wooden huts and a small beach restaurant. Fan huts are 500 baht, air-conditioned 1,000 baht. 167 Moo 2, Chaweng Beach, Tel: (077) 422 410.

The Wave Samui: One of the last true backpacker guesthouses on Chaweng Beach Road, located a five-minute walk from the centre of the town and has friendly and accommodating staff. The English owners also provide a restaurant, bar and cheap internet. Rooms range in style and price from shared to suite. Baan Rom Mai Resort: Located in North Chaweng in a huge, peaceful tropical garden area, this small, quiet, clean resort has six Thai-style bungalows and 17 rooms - both fan rooms and air conditioned rooms are available. Free House Bungalow: Situated on Bophut beach and one of the best guesthouse options here. They have a range of bungalows set in an attractive garden, and there are some great views of Koh Phangan from the beach. Samui Heritage Resort: An elegant boutique-style hotel combining the serenity of the natural environment and the convenience of a busy urban area. Sunny Resort: A small guesthouse just on the edge of Bophut, with clean and comfortable bungalows and good views. The beach here is a bit rocky, although it’s just a short walk to a sandier spot. The Red House: In the heart of fisherman’s village is this antique Chinese house with three beautifully-designed rooms and sea views. Has a café and roof terrace, too. Samui Pier Resort: Located on Big Buddha Beach and set in a large garden with swimming pool, Samui Pier also has a restaurant and bar onsite. Moon Huts: Has some great bungalows and is situated right on Mae Nam Beach. Bungalows range in size and style, some with fan and others with air conditioning.
